In its simplest terms an Assessment Center can be understood as standardized evaluation of behaviors based on multiple inputs by assessors’ pooled observations.
Assessment Centers (AC) are centers set up by an organization for periodic or continuous assessment of the competencies required to perform current, future likely or higher level jobs / roles / tasks. They are increasingly used to identify high fliers or fast trackers and develop leaders/competencies for the future.
It’s a management situation in which management candidates are asked to make decisions in hypothetical situations and are scored on their performance. It usually also involves testing and the use of management games.
There has been a trend towards using the term “Development Center”, in place of “Assessment Center” as ‘development’ sounds a little less intimidating as compared to the term ‘assessment’. Assessment Centers use trained assessors normally chosen from within the corporation. They are trained through intensive "Assessor Training Programs". They need to have mastered "observation" "recording" "classifying" and "measurement" skills. We have trained assessors to facilitate in the processes of an assessment center.
Assessor Tasks:
- Observe participant behavior in simulation exercises
- Record observed behavior on prepared forms
- Classify observed behaviors into appropriate dimensions
- Rate dimensions based upon behavioral evidence
Designing an Assessment Center:

Following are the features of a typical Assessment Center:
- Participants take part in job simulated exercises
- Behaviours are documented by assessors
- Individual assessors make an evaluation report
- Data is integrated through consensus with centre director.
- Performance report is given to the participant by the assessor.
Uses of Development & Assessment Centers
- Recruitment & promotion
- Succession planning
- Diagnosis of Training & Development Needs
- Organizational planning
- Team Building
We provide a complete range of Assessment Center design and delivery services, from competency matrix design through assessor training, exercise design and the provision of psychometric testing. We can design and manage the whole process of an assessment center if an organization has had no prior experience of this most effective assessment method.
